Micheaux Film Festival is Aug 4-7

Gregory, South Dakota homesteader Oscar Micheaux was a true pioneer on the prairie. He also was a pioneer filmmaker, becoming the first successful black man to make movies. The town of Gregory celebrates his life there annually with the Oscar Micheaux Film and Book Festival, this year August 4-7.

The U.S. Postal Service will unveil a special Micheaux postage stamp on Wednesday, August 4 to kick off this year's festivities.

Several of Micheaux's films from the early 20th Century and other films will be presented, along with discussions on topics related to Micheaux and Gregory. A concert at Micheaux's recreated homestead east of town will be held Thursday night. A number of presentations on the World War II era are planned.
