Tomahawk available at Amazon

Universal Pictures' "Tomahawk" from 1951, starring Van Helfin and Yvonne DeCarlo, is available at Amazon.com.

My copy is on the way, so haven't seen it yet.

Scenes were filmed in the Black Hills, and recent research by the team at Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper and "Dances With Wolves" Movie Set indicate that those scenes were just down the hill from them near Reptile Gardens. Stay tuned for more information coming soon, along with potential listing of South Dakota movie sites in the Smart Alec GPS Tour Guide.

  1. Thanks for the heads up on this one, Chad. I've been looking for this movie for years, mostly because of the connection to the Fort Phil Kearny story.

By the way, newspaper accounts from the time mention that the filming was done "south of Rapid City on the Acker Ranch near Spring Creek." Additional filming was done on "a small area on the western edge of the Badlands six miles south of Scenic."

Eighteen Rapid City residents had speaking parts in the movie ("for which they were paid a minimum of $55 per day") and others served as stand-ins for such actors as Jack Okie and Susan Cabot.
