Fort Hays from "Dances With Wolves" still a popular spot

Toward the beginning of Kevin Costner's epic "Dances With Wolves" his character John Dunbar is sent to Fort Hays, Kansas to receive an assignment further out on the frontier. The fort was recreated and the scenes filmed east of Rapid City on Highway 44.

Several years later some of the buildings were moved to their present location at the Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper and Show just outside of Rapid City on Highway 16. So you can now visit the commanding officers quarters and the supply house plus see blacksmith demonstrations and enjoy a full chuckwagon dinner with great musical entertainment.

Also included is the South Dakota Film Museum, with information on over 50 films created in the state.

There is no admission fee to tour the buildings. More information is available at the Fort Hays website.
